Lakeside boardwalk in Finnish Lakeland

The brief

A nature reserve needed a boardwalk that visitors could use all year, over wet ground and close to the water, without any treatment that could leach into the lake.

The timber

We supplied untreated European larch for the decking and heavier larch sections for the substructure. Ribbed boards give grip in rain and frost, and every piece was graded to keep sapwood to a minimum where the wood meets the ground.

The result

The boardwalk now leads 310 metres through reeds and pine forest to a viewing platform on the shore. The rangers expect it to last well over twenty years with simple care.
