The brief
The owners of a nineteenth-century apartment wanted to bring back the herringbone floor the building once had, with a lighter, calmer look than the dark stains of the past.
The timber
We cut the parquet from quarter-sawn select-grade oak, which shows fine silver figure and stays very stable through the dry Viennese winters. The blocks were kiln-dried to 9% and machined to tight tolerances so they could be glued directly to the screed.
The result
One hundred and forty square metres of herringbone now run through five rooms, finished with a natural white oil. The floor layers told us it was the most even batch they had laid that year.
